My phone has started to feel a bit like that kitchen drawer, the one with USB cables, batteries and a random metal thing that’s probably very important once I remember what it’s for.
I’ve had a digital declutter with a 30-90 day rule. Not used in a month? Not likely to use it in the next three? Time to say goodbye. From a security and data protection viewpoint, there’s benefits in reducing attack surfaces, data volumes and impactful information an exploit could access.
- Contacts - dozens of people I won’t speak to again.
- Texts - 90% TOTP codes.
- Email - delete AND unsubscribe.
- WhatsApp - what was important, may not be now.
- Downloads and Apps - can be downloaded again if I need them.
In less than an hour I’ve reclaimed inbox zero, found an extra 15GB, it feels a little bit snappier, and my digital sanity is mildly improved.
